Christel Kasselmann

When I was 14, I became interested in aquarium keeping. From the very beginning, it was aquarium plants that fascinated me. When I was 19, I travelled to the tropics (Tanzania) for the first time to study aquarium plants in their natural habitat. Since then, my enthusiasm for aquarium plants has never left me. This was followed by over 60 trips to the tropics on every continent of the world, where my particular interest was in researching the ecology and habitats of aquarium plants; my aim was always to use the knowledge I gained for culture in aquariums. I brought back many new species from my travels that are now cultivated as aquarium plants. I have written down my results and experiences in dealing with aquarium plants in five books and more than 400 magazine articles. I was also a co-author of “Die Aquariumpflanzen in Wort und Bild” (Albert Wendt) and “Das Große Lexikon der Aquaristik” (Ulmer Verlag). Of course, I am also an enthusiastic aquarist and maintain aquariums with a total capacity of 4000 L.

For many years I was involved in the VDA Aquatic Plants Working Group , for 19 years I was editor of Aqua Planta, and from 2003 to 2012 I headed the working group. Through this I got to know many people with the same interests. I really enjoy discussing and talking shop together – often late into the night. From 2012 to 2017 I also worked as district chairwoman in VDA District 01 to represent the interests of Berlin and Brandenburg aquarists organized in associations.

A major focus of my aquarium work is and has been active participation in the editorial advisory boards of Aquarium Heute, Aquaristik aktuell, Aqua Planta and Datz . Almost all of my publications have appeared in Aqua Planta and Datz. My passion for photography, which was influenced by my parents, led to my first lectures when I was young. I enjoy showing my pictures at home and abroad and am happy to be able to pass on my knowledge. As a qualified sound engineer, active music still brings me a lot of joy. I play regularly in the Berlin Accordion Orchestra (AOB) and the Berlin State Accordion Orchestra (LAOB) .
